How do I open my pool for the season after winter?

The answer

What to know.

Winter can leave your pool with large debris, fine particles, and algae. Start with a thorough cleaning and balanced water before returning to regular maintenance with your Dolphin.

  1. Step 1Prepare the pool and equipment

Carefully take off the winter cover. Use a skimmer or pool net to remove debris from the water's surface, then inspect the pool area and equipment.

Check the pump and filter condition, reconnect any systems disconnected for winter, and bring the water to the proper skimmer height for circulation.

  2. Step 2Clean the pool and balance the water

Scrub the walls and floor. Remove heavy debris that could clog the filter.

Test the water and balance its chemistry. Then shock the pool to kill bacteria and algae. Review the recommended pool chemical levels.

Let your test results guide which chemicals you need. These may include chlorine, pH increasers or decreasers, water balancers, or shock.

  3. Step 3Circulate the water and test again

Run the filtration system to circulate the treated water and help clear cloudiness. Retest to confirm the water is balanced.

After shocking the pool, wait 24 hours before putting your Dolphin in the water.

  4. Step 4Address algae before relying on the robot

Dolphin robots are built for routine cleaning, not heavy algae removal. Treat algae chemically before depending on the robot to maintain the pool.

If you need treatment guidance, contact Poolbots' pool experts by live chat or phone. Read more about removing algae from your pool.

  5. Step 5Inspect your Dolphin

Once the pool is clean and the water is balanced, check the robot's brushes, tracks, filters, and seals. Replace worn parts as needed. Poolbots sells replacement robot parts.

If your robot requires charging, check that it charges correctly. Run a test cycle before returning to regular use.

  6. Step 6Run a full cleaning cycle

Start with a complete cycle using the fine (net) filter to collect larger debris. Clean the filter when the cycle finishes, then run more cycles as needed.

If you need replacement filter panels, ask Poolbots' pool experts for help.

Keep the power supply sheltered and away from the pool edge. Protect it from rain, heat, cold, and other outdoor conditions. Review the power supply protection guidance.

Once the water is clear, use your Dolphin regularly to help keep the pool clean throughout the season. Thorough opening preparation helps get the pool ready for summer swimming.
