Support answer · pH

Why is proper pH balance important, and how often should I test my pool water?

Short answer: Keep pool pH at 7.2–7.6 and test at least weekly during swimming season to help chlorine work properly and protect swimmers and equipment.

Tools: Reliable pool water test kit, pH Plus

Based on Maytronics support, updated 2026-07-21, rewritten by Poolbots' pool experts.

The answer

What to know.

Properly balanced pH helps keep your pool water clear and comfortable for swimmers. It also:

  • Helps chlorine and other disinfectants work effectively.
  • Helps prevent irritated eyes and skin.
  • Protects your pool’s equipment and surfaces against corrosion.
  • Pool water: 7.2–7.6
  • Spa water: 7.2–7.8

How often to test

During swimming season, check your pool water at least weekly. Test more often after heavy pool use, rainfall or adding chemicals to help keep the water balanced.

How to check and raise low pH

  1. Step 1: Measure the pH Use a dependable pool water test kit to check the water.

  2. Step 2: Calculate the amount of pH Plus If the reading is below 7.2, use your pool’s size to determine how much pH Plus is needed.

  3. Step 3: Add pH Plus Keep the pump on as you spread the pH Plus evenly over the pool.

  4. Step 4: Test again Wait a few hours, then retest the water and make another adjustment if needed.
