Support answer · Alkalinity

How do I add alkalinity increaser, how much should I use, and how long should I wait to swim?

Short answer: Add alkalinity increaser as directed, run the pump for at least 4 hours, and wait until the product has fully circulated before swimming.

Tools: Pool water test kit, Alkalinity increaser, Pool pump

Based on Maytronics support, updated 2026-08-11, rewritten by Poolbots' pool experts.

The answer

What to know.

  1. Step 1: Check your pool water Test the water to find your current alkalinity level before adding the product.

  2. Step 2: Use the dose on the label Follow the product manufacturer's dosing directions. As a general guide, 1.5 lbs per 10,000 gallons increases alkalinity by approximately 10 ppm. Always follow your product's instructions.

  3. Step 3: Distribute the increaser evenly Spread it evenly over the pool's deepest area.

  4. Step 4: Keep the pump running Let the pump circulate the water for at least 4 hours.

  5. Step 5: Check the water again Retest before making any further adjustments.

When you can swim

Swimming is generally okay once the product has circulated completely, usually after about 4 hours with the pump running. Follow the product manufacturer's instructions.
